Program Overview

The Certificate Program in Political Documentary Filmmaking & Cultural Diplomacy is comprised of specialized courses, workshops and field work, designed to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge needed in the field of Cultural Diplomacy, International Relations and Political Documentary Filmmaking and equip participants with the tools to create a documentary throughout all stages of Production: from shaping the Idea and Message of the Film up to its Production.

Program Structure, Methodology & Curriculum »

The Certificate Program in Political Documentary Filmmaking & Cultural Diplomacy is 15 days´ program devoted to the study of Cultural Diplomacy and the Art of Political Documentary Filmmaking. The Program consists of lectures, seminars, workshops and Field work, upon which
students will produce their own documentary of 5 minutes, in the context of social issues within German Society. The Participants will gain fundamental knowledge to all stages of Production from a Shaping and Writing of the Project up to the basic knowledge of cutting and in post -production.

The Program has been designed to address the most important issues of diplomacy and communication in an increasingly globalized world. The development of knowledge and skills in the field of Cultural Diplomacy is nowadays essential for future careers, professional development, and a proper understanding of processes in the international arena.
The courses will provide participants with an introduction to the field of Cultural Diplomacy and subject-specific knowledge, while the structure will enable participants to learn about the theoretical background and teach them how to use conceptual approaches during the workshops, thus providing a great opportunity to enhance one’s career advancement.

The Courses and Workshops on Political Documentary Filmmaking will provide the Participants with fundamental Knowledge on the History and Evolution of the Field, Introduction to the documentary genres and Types, and Analysis of a film from a Semiotic point of view and will equip them with the Necessary tools for Political Documentary Filmmaking.

Program Locations

Based primarily in the ICD House in Berlin, the program sessions will be held in addition at a number of leading political, historic, and cultural venues across the city.

Program Participants

Participation in the program is open to governmental & diplomatic officials, academics, artists, journalists, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, young professionals and students as well as other interested individuals from across the world.

Certificate of Completion

All participants will be awarded an official certificate of Completion upon completion of the program, which will provide details of the courses taken.  The Participants will have also completed their own Documentary film Project.

During the weeklong program the participants will have opportunities to network amongst each other, with the speakers, as well as with ICD Advisory Board Members and partners. Academy Session participants become part of a growing international network of people from across the world with different fields of interest and levels of experience who share a commitment to intercultural exchange. Participants will be able to remain in touch with each other through the ICD Networks.
