About University of the West of Scotland (UWS)

University of the West of Scotland is one of Scotland’s largest modern universities, but has origins dating back to 1897. It aims to have a transformational influence on the economic, social and cultural development of the communities we serve. The university provides relevant, high quality, inclusive higher education and innovative and useful research.

UWS has a distinctive and important profile, with four campuses across the west and south-west of Scotland in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley, and a new 5th campus in the centre of the UK capital London.

UWS is an international university with over 1400 international students drawn from more than 80 countries across the globe, and we work with over 100 international partners.

Our courses are designed in partnership with business, industry and the professions to ensure that learning meets the demands of the world of work. From day one our students are preparing for their careers – in the classroom; through placement and work-related/work-based learning and a range of other learning experiences such as study abroad opportunities.

This focus can be evidenced by the fact that 93% of our undergraduate students and 97% of our postgraduate students are in work or further study six months after graduation. We’re proud that we’ve created an environment and a reputation that welcomes, celebrates and nurtures diversity. In the 2015 National Student Survey we were top in the UK for student satisfaction in a range of subjects; and we were also awarded a 4-star rating in the ‘WhatUni’ Student Choice Awards 2015. We have a proud record in delivering work-ready graduates and developing effective partnerships with business, industry and the public and voluntary sectors. Through our innovative learning partnership we invest in people’s potential to shape their future. Built on uniting students, professionals, industry and our communities, this partnership stretches from the West of Scotland around the world. We believe in the transformative power of active learning and engagement. We treat our students as individuals, partners and potential leaders in their fields and professions, providing them with the globally relevant knowledge, skills and confidence to think critically and to challenge received wisdom. UWS is a proudly different university where ambition and success are at the heart of what we do.

UWS School of Media, Culture and Society

The School offers a wide range of innovative and dynamic programs of study designed by staff with wide-ranging experience in all aspects of the creative industries and the social sciences. We aim to develop key skills in creativity, critical and analytical thinking, and enterprise in all of our students.

Our School and staff benefit from a wide network of industry connections and have close working relationships with an extensive range of employers and professional bodies in the creative and cultural industries, social and health care sectors, local and central government, education, the private and non-for-profit (‘third') sectors.

With a collaborative and interactive approach to learning, each year we welcome many visiting experts and offer projects and opportunities for students to develop their creative, artistic and academic skills.

The School sees internationalization at the heart of its teaching, research and other main activities and has an expanding range of international links based on research connections, participation in Erasmus exchanges and work with visiting scholars. We also have a distinctly international staff profile within the School. At the core of the School’s internationalization strategy is the aim to deliver to our students an international experience through enhanced internationalization of our curriculum and study abroad experiences. The School is committed to enhancing student exposure to an international experience by fully embedding a global outlook and aspects of global citizenship within our programs.
