Students of the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy are informal cultural ambassadors. The Villa and the culture of communal life there provide a unique space for international intercultural dialogue and the exchange of ideas, traditions and cultures on an individual level. The potential of such a space should not be underestimated. In an increasingly interconnected world, it is imperative that the next generation of political leaders are both aware of, and sensitive to, one another’s cultural heritage and traditions if we are to foster a truly peaceful and sustainable global political system.
Events such as this summer’s BBQ and drinks party for students, held at the Villa, form just a small part of the programme of cultural exchange offered by the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy. Under the cool shade offered by the trees in the Villa garden, the long summer evening was spent sharing food, music and conversation with one another. Through such events interns and students are able to introduce and share both unique, perhaps even unknown, elements of their cultural heritage with their contemporaries, while simultaneously stumbling across many more cultural similarities than are perhaps apparent at first glance.
The Academy for Cultural Diplomacy Villa and garden, located in the exclusive neighbourhood of Berlin-Lichterfelde, provides bright, airy and spacious accommodation for the students of the ICD Academy. Spread over five floors, the villa including a Jacuzzi and sauna with adjoining roof terrace on the top floor. Serviced by multiple S-Bahn and bus connections, the ICD Villa is easily accessible from Berlin city centre, yet enjoys a quiet location close to open woodland in Grunewald and a number of lakes at Wannsee, Schlachtensee, Nikolassee and Krumme Lanke. In the summer months the lakes are popular destinations for Berliners and tourists alike, and provide welcome relief from the heat of the city, in addition to offering opportunities for swimming, sailing and numerous other water sports.
